The Challenge
Grotell Design is committed to the design and development of fine watches and timepiece products that embody the unique identity and culture of its clients. Clients seek out Grotell Design because of the company's ability to synthesize and embody their identity and cultural vision into distinctly recognizable products. The company needed a highly precise tool to study forms and to verify engineering assumptions for the development of such signature products. Other rapid prototyping technologies had proven frustrating with regards to cost and resolution.
The Solution
Grotell investigated several possible solutions including a 3 by 5 axis CNC machine and various rapid prototyping technologies but chose the Solidscape ModelMaker II. "The ModelMaker II incorporates the only technology that provides the ability to generate a highly precise pattern for every major component of the watch design. Every component of the bracelet, bezels, bezel rings, case backs, dial plates, crowns and buckles are created on the ModelMaker II. At Grotell Design we concentrate on being great designers not great machinists."
"The ModelMaker II required virtually no learning curve. Even our junior designers with a good 45 minute overview are comfortable setting up and running their own models."
